Leadership that drives our vision for better

Our leaders have operated their own HVAC maintenance and construction companies. They’ve built products for Google, Motorola, and Caterpillar. They come from retail, food service, real estate, and more. All of that experience comes together at SMS Assist.

Bettering the communities where we live and work

We’re not only working to maintain our communities—we’re giving back to them, too. In 2019 SMSers volunteered close to 1,500 hours through SMS Serves, our community volunteer program.

It all started in 1999

Introducing the industry’s first service platform

In 1999, entrepreneur Mike Rothman started a floor care business. After starting and growing many facilities ventures, Mike knew he preferred working with third parties over managing his own providers. And he believed that technology could deliver visibility into what those third parties were doing in the field.

So he modified old software from an extermination business of his to work for floor care—thus creating the first service platform in the facilities industry.

Building a network of providers

In 2005 SMS Assist won its first floor care customer. In 2008, to support more locations, SMS Assist started building a national network of floor care providers.

More customers and locations drove demand for new services. SMS Assist worked to build its network of providers through acquisition. Then came snow and ice, landscaping, and so on.

Investing is believing

SMS Assist achieved unicorn status—a private company valued at more than $1 billion—in 2016, thanks to a Series D $150 million investment from Goldman Sachs Investment Partners.

SMS Assist is honored to count Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, Pritzker Group Venture Capital (PGVC), Insight Venture Partners, and the Huizenga Group as its investment partners.

Launching One by SMS Assist

Mike’s vision for more visibility in the field was brought to life with the launch of a mobile app in 2013. The launch of SMS Assist’s integrated platform, One by SMS Assist, followed in 2016. Both continue to grow and evolve to this day.

Together, this technology creates an ecosystem powered today by SMS Assist’s customers, providers and employees and continues to deliver better experiences for properties and providers alike.
